3 Days

For Grades 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10

·        Are you pleased with your School’s/District’s Value Added Growth Data?

·        Did 80% or more of your students pass the Ohio Achievement Tests for each subject?

·        Does your staff have reliable and current data to make important decisions about instruction and intervention during the school year or are they still using the previous year’s data for intervention?

·        Do you want to decrease the time spent supervising teachers and increase the time spent monitoring student learning?

·        Can your staff predict with accuracy how each student will perform on the Ohio Achievement Tests?

·        Does your staff have the knowledge and expertise to develop and create short cycle assessments aligned to state standards with high level questions that model the format of Ohio Achievement Tests?

The Academy will provide each school or district the opportunity to develop four (4) short cycle assessments for each subject per grade level (dependent on the number of teachers attending) that would be in place for the 2008-09 school year.  Imagine in just 3 days having the tools to help align assessments and instruction to standards and improve student learning for the upcoming school year!  Other Assessment workshops provide participants with skills and knowledge about Assessment for Learning.  During this workshop, teachers will gain knowledge and skills, PLUS leave the workshop with personally created assessments aligned to the state curriculum and a pacing guide that will immediately impact student learning in your school.

Many districts provide too many resources (money, time and people) on inputs (curriculum and textbooks) and spend very little resources that directly impact student learning.  Teachers that begin their instruction by examining carefully prepared and aligned assessments (Begin with the end in mind) will do a much better job of ensuring high levels of student learning.

The Case for Short Cycle Assessments

Canaan Middle School of the Jonathan Alder School District committed to the use of short cycle assessments immediately after reconfiguring to a 5th and 6th grade building in 2006.  Despite having limited resources (Bottom 5% in Ohio in Per Pupil Expenditure), Canaan immediately received the distinction of being rated Excellent by the State Department of Education and received a National School to Watch Award.  Canaan Middle School uses short cycle assessments in 5th grade Social Studies, Science, Language Arts and Math, and 6th grade Social Studies, Science, Language Arts and Math.  In addition Canaan Middle School:

·        Value Added data was Green (Above Average Growth) in the Ohio Department of Education’s Value Added Growth 2007 data in 5th grade Reading and Math, and 6th grade reading and Math.  Less than 5% of the State had Green Value Added Data for Reading and Math at both 5th and 6th grade.

·        Value Added data was Green in the Battelle’s Project Soar data for 5th grade Social Studies and Science.

·        94% of 6th grade students pass the Math portion of the Ohio Achievement Test.  This was the highest in Central Ohio (Franklin, Madison, Union and Delaware Counties).  Over 50% were advanced or accelerated.

·        Other scores were 5th grade- Science (85%), Math (83.5%), Reading (83.5%),  and 6th Grade Reading (90%).

“The students, staff and principal believed that the development and use of short cycle assessments contributed to student learning and the success experienced on the Ohio Achievement Tests and

Value Added Data.”
